Throughout life, bones go through continuous turn over of remodelling. Up to the age of 30 the body makes new bone faster than it breaks down old bone, therefore bone mass increases. After that, laying down bone decreases and bone material is lost than is formed so bone density decreases. This results in higher risk of fractures and lower bone density as bones become weaker.
What is Aquamin?
When you think about what minerals are beneficial for bone, it’s quite normal to think of calcium. However, it is well known that minerals besides calcium are useful in supporting bone health. Aquamin is a natural mineral rich source produced from calcareous marine algae harvested from the North Atlantic seabed. Minerals are accumulated in this plant from seawater, and stored as carbonate salts in the plant. Other than washing and milling, Aquamin is unaltered from the raw material and as such represents a natural multi-mineral material.
Aquamin is a marine derived multi-mineral complex which has been demonstrated to possess unique activity in helping to maintain healthy bone formation.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a common bone disease whereby the bones degrade, become porous so that the density is decreased and the bones become unable to perform basic functions and are more susceptible to fractures and breaks.
Aquamin has been found in trials to:
- Provide bio-available calcium and trace minerals
- Enhance function by reducing symptoms associated with inflammation.
- Influence biochemical bone turnover markers.
In an animal trial, Aquamin supplementation was found to slow the onset of bone loss when compared to supplementation with calcium carbonate.
In another trial, the calcium and magnesium found in Aquamin was found to out-perform alternative calcium and magnesium sources in regards to preservation of bone density.
The Royal College of Surgeons identified that Aquamin was able improve osteoblast activity, even in the absence of vitamin D.
Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is a progressive joint disorder whereby joints degrade resulting in pain and reduction in quality of life.
In one study, Aquamin was observed to out perform glucosamine sulphate in reducing stiffness and pain.
Aquamin has also been observed to reduce inflammatory markers such as NFkB, which is commonly inhibited by NSAIDs.
